Introduction

The Reliable Classic

Consistently recognized as one of the best beaches in the world, Unawatuna has suffered from over-tourism at times, but its natural beauty and calm, swimmable waters make it impossible to ignore. It is incredibly convenient.
3

Finding Jungle Beach

The Secret Cove

An incredibly picturesque cove located on the other side of Rumassala hill. It has crystal-clear water and a truly 'Robinson Crusoe' feel.

How to get there

You can either negotiate a quick boat drop-off from the main Unawatuna beach, or take a steep but beautiful 20-minute hike down from the Peace Pagoda.

The Dalawella Rope Swing

The Instagram Famous Swing

Located in front of the Dream Cabana Guesthouse on nearby Dalawella Beach. A rope tied to a leaning palm tree lets you swing dramatically out over the Indian Ocean.

Costs and Timing

Expect to pay around 500 LKR for a few swings. Arrive early in the morning for the best light (and to avoid a long line), or during the sunset for the most dramatic colors.

Practical Information

Getting Around

Unawatuna is just a brief 10-minute tuk-tuk ride from the Galle Railway Station. Walking the main Unawatuna strip is easy, though watch out for passing tuk-tuks on the narrow paths.

Dining Options

Because it is so established, Unawatuna offers incredible variety. You can get authentic Italian espresso, wood-fired pizza, massive seafood platters, and traditional Sri Lankan rotis all within a 5-minute walk.
History Hero
Myths and Empires

The Fallen Mountain

Unawatuna's history is incredibly rich, intertwined with ancient Hindu mythology and European colonial conquests.

1

The Ramayana Myth

According to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, the monkey god Hanuman was tasked with fetching life-saving medicinal herbs from the Himalayas.

Unable to identify the exact herb, he brought the entire mountain. Folklore says a chunk of it 'fell down' ('Una-watuna' in Sinhala), creating the Rumassala Hill that defines the area's landscape.

2

Colonial Battles

Historically, Unawatuna was a thriving seaport. In 1640, it was the strategic landing site for the Dutch forces who marched onward to defeat the Portuguese and claim the mighty Galle Fort.

""Where the legends of gods meet the wars of empires on a tropical shore."

Natural Defenses

Unlike other surfing beaches on the South Coast, Unawatuna is incredibly calm. This is due to a natural offshore rock reef that spans the bay.

This reef acts as a massive breakwater, dismantling the powerful Indian Ocean swells before they ever reach the sand.

Engineering

Safe Swimming

The result is a bay with waters as calm as a lagoon during the dry season, making it one of the absolute safest beaches in Sri Lanka for children and weak swimmers.

The Japanese Peace Pagoda

Built by the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji, the massive white stupa atop Rumassala serves as a beacon of unity and offers 360-degree views.

Laid-back Charm

Art

The Backpacker Paradise

The original beach getaway

Unawatuna was the very first beach in Sri Lanka to be 'discovered' by the global backpacker community in the 1970s. Since then, it has grown significantly, but it retains a quirky, casual charm.

The narrow road running parallel to the beach is absolutely packed with colorful guesthouses, bohemian souvenir shops, independent art galleries, and gelato stands.

A Sunset Ritual

In the evenings, the sunbeds fold away locally, and restaurants construct impressive seafood displays. The atmosphere is less focused on heavy partying and more about acoustic music and family dinners on the sand.

"The perfect place to do absolutely nothing all day."
