The Story of the Bridge
Built during the British colonial period without any steel, heavily relying on local ingenuity.
The World War I Shortage
Construction started when World War I broke out. The steel consignments assigned for the bridge were reallocated to Britain's war effort.
Local builders, led by P. K. Appuhami and British engineers, decided to build the bridge entirely out of stone bricks and cement.
The Bridge in the Sky
Standing at nearly 25 meters high and over 90 meters long, the bridge spans a deep gorge.
The local name 'Ahas Namaye Palama' translates to 'Nine Skies Bridge', honoring the view of nine patches of sky seen through the arches from below.
""A symbol of resilience and local ingenuity that has carried trains for roughly a century."
Architectural Feat
The bridge is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country.
Its structure relies entirely on the strength of cut stone columns and masonry arches, forming a massive continuous viaduct.
No Steel Construction
Not a single piece of reinforcing steel or iron was used. The structural integrity comes from the precise alignment of the stone.
The Curve
The bridge features a gentle curve that allowed trains to navigate the difficult terrain of the hill country without slowing down completely.
